As the detectives’ surveillance shift crept towards the early hours of dawn, Megan ended the call she’d been on. ‘Good news. The ANPR cameras tracked the lorry with the Porsche 918 Spyder inside it to Dover, and TSU has alerted the NCA. They’re going to be liaising with Interpol to see where it ends up on the other side of the channel.

‘Excellent news. This is looking like it’s going to be the start of a very bad week for Forbes and his business associates. We’ll keep this place under constant surveillance until Chris presses the button on the raid. Hopefully, by the end of this little episode we’ll have a clear lead on why Jimmy was killed and by whom.’

‘Here’s hoping.’ Megan gestured at the garage. ‘I wonder why Forbes is still in there. All his guys left over an hour ago. You don’t think we missed him slipping away, do you?’

‘Based on the fact that his Jensen Interceptor is still parked outside, and as we haven’t heard anything from the team who has his house under surveillance, I think we can be as sure as we can be that he’s still in there.’

The DI looked through the zoom lens at the light glowing from a skylight. Forbes had no idea how his whole world was about to come crashing down around him, especially if he had a hand in Harper’s murder.

Then he spotted a flickering orange glow reflected in the glass.

What?

Suddenly, a smoke alarm shrilled out into the night as smoke curled out from beneath the garage door.

‘Feck!’ Joseph said. ‘Call the fire brigade and ask for backup.’

‘Already on it,’ she said, punching the number into her mobile.

Joseph leapt out of the Peugeot and sprinted towards the garage as the veil of smoke pouring out beneath the door grew thicker. The DI reached a door next to the unit’s garage entrance and yanked it open, charging into the small office where they’d spoken with Forbes earlier.

On the other side of the office window, flames and smoke were billowing out of a vehicle inspection pit inside the garage. The fire was already reaching up towards the ceiling and spreading outwards. Even through the glass, Joseph could feel the temperature was already intense as the fire started to consume the cars in a flowing circle of expanding flames.

Then he saw a man staring at him from the far side of the garage beyond the wall of flames, wearing a crash helmet and dressed in motorbike leathers. Spotting the DI, the figure darted through a door at the rear of the property.

Joseph’s mind whirled. Was Forbes actually their mystery motorcyclist, and attempting to torch the evidence before he escaped?

The DI rushed back outside, almost running headlong into Megan, coming to help him. Then they both heard a motorbike being revved and the next moment, the detectives caught a brief glimpse of a rider on a trail bike emerge from the side of the garage. But rather than head away on the road
